Recognizing the importance of storm preparation, you understand the significance of being ready for a storm. You have already assembled a safety kit, gathered emergency supplies, secured a backup generator, and familiarized yourself with evacuation protocols. However, it is equally crucial to know the necessary steps to take after the storm, particularly if your home has sustained damage.

Follow these actions during the aftermath to restore your home:

1. Evaluate the Damage:
Once the storm has subsided, it's essential to wait for a safe moment before assessing the damage. If you encounter downed power lines, a common occurrence after storms, maintain a minimum distance of 10 feet and immediately contact 911. In some cases, emergency tarp services may be required.

When it is safe to do so, take photographs to document all visible damage. Severe hailstorms or hurricanes can have a significant impact on your home's exterior. The damage may be evident, such as broken windows or cracked/missing sections of siding. However, the roof might require a more detailed inspection. It is strongly advised to seek professional assessment as there may be extensive damage not immediately visible.

Exercise caution while on the roof to avoid loose shingles or potential tripping hazards.

2. Identifying Hail Damage:
a. Metal Roof:
Examine the flashing, metal valleys, and the roof itself for dents. The size of the dents will indicate the hail's intensity. Use a ruler in the pictures to provide your insurer with an idea of the damage extent. Check for dents in other metal components like gutters and downspouts.

b. Shingle Roof:
Look for missing granules on the shingles caused by hail erosion, which can affect their performance and lifespan. Circular bare spots on the shingles, exposing the black substrate, and granule buildup in gutters and downspouts are indicators. Apply pressure to dented shingles to determine if they are deteriorating. Capture pictures of circular cracks caused by large hail, using a ruler for reference.

3. Identifying Wind Damage:
Scan the ground for missing shingles and watch out for cracked or curling shingles. An accumulation of granules in the gutters is also a sign of high-wind damage.

4. Identifying Water Damage:
Take note of water spots on the ceiling and walls. Inspect windows for fog between glass panes. Check gutters for excessive water buildup, as it can cause structural damage if obstructed. Walk around the floor and identify areas that are sagging or waterlogged.

5. File an Insurance Claim:
Do not hesitate to file an insurance claim. In Michigan, insurance companies are prohibited from raising premiums due to natural disasters. Your agent or insurer will likely request a written explanation accompanied by photographic evidence.

Although you may have already provided a detailed report and photos of the damage, an adjuster might still need to inspect and compare their findings. Keep in mind that some insurers may attempt to minimize your claim. We offer assistance in navigating this complex process to ensure you receive the full value for the damage.

6. Finding a Reliable Contractor:
Beware of unreliable contractors who may take advantage of the situation. After a hurricane or hailstorm, be cautious of "storm chasers" who set up quickly but perform subpar or no work at all. They often demand a significant down payment without intending to complete any repairs.

Ask pertinent questions to potential contractors. Are they licensed and insured? Do they use subcontractors? Do they provide warranties for their work? Are they affiliated with reputable roofing associations? Read online reviews and request references from homeowners.

To summarize:
Dealing with the aftermath of a storms or hailstorm can be stressful and chaotic. However, the right contractor can help restore order. We can repair your roof within one to two days.
